The World's Oldest Living Culture

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the First Australians, who have lived on this land for over 65,000 years. Their culture is considered the oldest continuous living culture in the world. Before European settlement, which began in 1788, there were approximately 250 distinct language groups across Australia. Sadly, many of these languages have been lost, but efforts are being made to preserve those that remain. The Dreamtime, which is called different names by different groups, is a spiritual belief system that explains how the world was created. Aboriginal art, which includes rock paintings that are thousands of years old, has been recognised internationally as a significant art form. The didgeridoo is a musical instrument that was developed by Aboriginal people over 1,500 years ago. In recent years, Australia has been working toward reconciliation with its Indigenous peoples, acknowledging the injustices that were committed in the past.

📍 Kakadu National Park
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kakadu National Park, which is located in the Northern Territory, is a place that has been sacred to Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years. It has been listed as both a natural and cultural World Heritage Site, which makes it one of the few places in the world to hold this dual status. I have spent three days exploring this vast park, and the rock art sites that were shown to us by an Indigenous guide were absolutely incredible. Some of the paintings that have been found here are believed to be over 20,000 years old. The guide, who belonged to the local Bininj people, shared stories about the Dreamtime that had been passed down through generations. The wetlands and waterfalls were stunning as well. Yellow Water Billabong, which is best visited at sunrise, was filled with crocodiles and colourful birds. This is a destination that has profoundly changed my understanding of Australian history and culture.

5 🦘 Australia Tips
