The Gold Coast, stretching along seventy kilometres of pristine coastline in southeastern Queensland, is widely regarded as Australia's surfing paradise. If you were passionate about surfing, there would be no better place on earth to pursue your passion. The consistent swells generated by the Pacific Ocean, combined with a variety of beach breaks and point breaks, create conditions that are envied by surfers worldwide. Surfers Paradise, despite having become somewhat commercialised over the years, remains the symbolic heart of the Gold Coast's beach culture. However, it is the lesser-known spots — such as Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Heads, and Currumbin — that are preferred by experienced surfers seeking uncrowded waves. Not only does the Gold Coast attract recreational surfers, but it also hosts several prestigious international competitions, including events on the World Surf League championship tour. Were it not for the dedication of local environmental groups, the coastal ecosystem that supports these magnificent waves might have been compromised by overdevelopment long ago.

If someone had told me a year ago that I would be standing on a surfboard in Australia, I would have laughed. Yet here I was, wobbling but upright, riding a small wave at Currumbin Beach. The two-hour beginner lesson, conducted by an instructor who spoke as though surfing were the simplest thing in the world, was both humbling and exhilarating. We began on the sand, practising the pop-up technique repeatedly until our arms ached. The instructor explained that were we to attempt surfing without proper technique, we would almost certainly injure ourselves. Once in the water, the sensation of catching a wave for the first time was indescribable. The instructor mentioned that Currumbin was chosen for beginners because the waves are gentle and the current is relatively weak. What I appreciated most was the small group size — only six students — which meant each person received individual attention. Had the class been larger, I doubt I would have succeeded in standing up on my very first lesson. I would recommend this experience to anyone, regardless of their fitness level.

基本用語: wipeout(波に飲まれること)、lineup(沖で波を待つ場所)、barrel(波のトンネル)、grommet(若いサーファー)。'I had a massive wipeout today!'(今日すごいワイプアウトしちゃった!)
'Not only does the Gold Coast attract recreational surfers, but it also hosts prestigious competitions.'
