Gold Coast: Where the Waves Never Stop

The Gold Coast, stretching along seventy kilometres of pristine coastline in southeastern Queensland, is widely regarded as Australia's surfing paradise. If you were passionate about surfing, there would be no better place on earth to pursue your passion. The consistent swells generated by the Pacific Ocean, combined with a variety of beach breaks and point breaks, create conditions that are envied by surfers worldwide. Surfers Paradise, despite having become somewhat commercialised over the years, remains the symbolic heart of the Gold Coast's beach culture. However, it is the lesser-known spots — such as Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Heads, and Currumbin — that are preferred by experienced surfers seeking uncrowded waves. Not only does the Gold Coast attract recreational surfers, but it also hosts several prestigious international competitions, including events on the World Surf League championship tour. Were it not for the dedication of local environmental groups, the coastal ecosystem that supports these magnificent waves might have been compromised by overdevelopment long ago.

📍 Learn to Surf at Currumbin Beach
⭐⭐⭐⭐

If someone had told me a year ago that I would be standing on a surfboard in Australia, I would have laughed. Yet here I was, wobbling but upright, riding a small wave at Currumbin Beach. The two-hour beginner lesson, conducted by an instructor who spoke as though surfing were the simplest thing in the world, was both humbling and exhilarating. We began on the sand, practising the pop-up technique repeatedly until our arms ached. The instructor explained that were we to attempt surfing without proper technique, we would almost certainly injure ourselves. Once in the water, the sensation of catching a wave for the first time was indescribable. The instructor mentioned that Currumbin was chosen for beginners because the waves are gentle and the current is relatively weak. What I appreciated most was the small group size — only six students — which meant each person received individual attention. Had the class been larger, I doubt I would have succeeded in standing up on my very first lesson. I would recommend this experience to anyone, regardless of their fitness level.

オーストラリアでサーフィンの話題は避けて通れません。基本用語: wipeout(波に飲まれること)、lineup(沖で波を待つ場所)、barrel(波のトンネル)、grommet(若いサーファー)。'I had a massive wipeout today!'(今日すごいワイプアウトしちゃった!)のように使います。

Not only... but also の倒置構文

'Not only does the Gold Coast attract recreational surfers, but it also hosts prestigious competitions.' のように、Not only が文頭に来ると倒置が起こります(does + 主語 + 動詞原形)。否定語句が文頭に来る倒置は2級の重要ポイントです。

A (Koa):
Hi there! I'd like to rent a surfboard for the day. What would you recommend for a beginner?
B:
G'day! If I were a beginner, I'd go with a soft-top longboard. They're much more stable and forgiving.
A (Koa):
How much does it cost to rent one for the whole day?
B:
It's forty-five dollars for a full day, which includes the board and a leg rope. Were you planning to go out today?
A (Koa):
Yes, I was hoping to try Surfers Paradise. Is that a good spot for beginners?
B:
It's all right, but if you were after something more beginner-friendly, I'd suggest Currumbin or Coolangatta. The waves are smaller there.
A (Koa):
I see. A friend of mine said that the waves were quite big yesterday. Is today similar?
B:
Nah, it's mellowed out today. The swell has dropped to about one metre, which is ideal for learners.
A (Koa):
Perfect! Should I be worried about anything in the water? I've heard there are jellyfish sometimes.
B:
Bluebottles can appear occasionally, but the lifeguards would have put up a warning if there were any today. You'll be right.
A (Koa):
That's reassuring. I'll take the soft-top longboard, please.
B:
No worries. Just make sure you surf between the red and yellow flags — that's where the lifeguards patrol. Have a ripper time out there!
