Why You Need a Tax File Number

A Tax File Number, which is commonly called a TFN, is a unique number that has been created by the Australian Taxation Office. It is used to manage your tax and superannuation records. If you have been given a Working Holiday visa, you can apply for a TFN online through the ATO website. The application, which takes about ten minutes, is free. Your TFN will be sent to your Australian address by post within 28 days. It is very important that you get a TFN before you start working. If a TFN has not been provided to your employer, you will be taxed at the highest rate, which is currently 45 percent. Your TFN is a personal number that should never be shared on social media or given to strangers.
