👨‍🍳 Day 26: Working in a Kitchen

キッチン英語

Life in an Australian Kitchen

Working in a kitchen is one of the most common jobs that have been taken by Working Holiday makers in Australia. The fast-paced environment, which can be stressful at first, teaches you many useful skills. Orders are called out by the head chef, and they must be understood quickly. Dishes that have been prepared must be checked for quality before they are sent to customers. Kitchen safety rules, which are taught during your first training session, must be followed at all times. A food safety certificate, which is also called a Food Handler's Certificate, is required in most states. It can be obtained online for around 150 dollars. Many kitchens have hired staff from different countries, so English is used as the common language. Communication skills that have been developed in the kitchen will help you in many other situations.

📍 The Rustic Kitchen, Surry Hills, Sydney
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have been working at The Rustic Kitchen for two months now, and it has been an amazing experience. The head chef, who trained me personally, is strict but fair. I was taught how to prepare salads, grill meats, and plate dishes beautifully. The team, which includes people from five different countries, has become like a family. English is spoken throughout the shift, so my language skills have improved a lot. Staff meals are provided every shift, and the food that is cooked here is really delicious. I have learned kitchen vocabulary that I never knew before, like "behind" when you walk behind someone, and "corner" when you turn a corner. This is a workplace that has given me confidence and skills which I will use forever.

🎭 キッチンでの初日、先輩スタッフに仕事を教わる場面
A (Koa):
Alright, welcome to the kitchen! Have you ever worked in a kitchen before?
B:
I've worked in a small restaurant in Japan, but this is my first time in Australia.
A (Koa):
No worries. The first thing that needs to be done is washing your hands properly.
B:
Got it. Where is the hand wash station located?
A (Koa):
It's over there, next to the fridge. An apron must also be worn at all times.
B:
Understood. What will I be doing today?
A (Koa):
You'll be helping me with food prep. These vegetables need to be chopped by noon.
B:
Sure. How should they be cut? Thin slices or thick chunks?
A (Koa):
Thin slices for the salad. And remember to say 'behind' when you walk behind someone.
B:
I've heard about that. I'll make sure to call it out every time.
