Getting Around Australia by Public Transport

Public transport systems in Australian cities have been developed to help people travel easily. In Sydney, an Opal card, which is a reusable smart card, is used for buses, trains, ferries, and light rail. Melbourne has a similar system called Myki. These cards can be purchased at convenience stores or train stations, and they must be tapped on and off at the start and end of each trip. Fares are calculated based on the distance that has been travelled. Weekly caps have been introduced, so you will not be charged more than a set amount per week. Buses, which are the most common form of transport in suburban areas, run frequently during peak hours. Timetables that have been updated recently can be checked on official transport apps. It is recommended that these apps are downloaded before you start travelling around the city.

📍 Sydney Trains & Opal Card System
⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have been using the Opal card every day since I arrived in Sydney, and I think the system is well designed. My card was bought at a convenience store near Central Station for just a few dollars. The trains, which are clean and air-conditioned, run on time most of the time. I have found that the weekly cap, which is set at around 50 dollars, saves a lot of money. The Opal app, which has been downloaded on my phone, shows my balance and trip history. One thing that confused me was that ferries, which are included in the Opal system, have different fare rules. I was charged extra because I forgot to tap off at my destination. The system that has been built for Sydney is impressive and much easier to use than I expected.

5 🦘 Australia Tips

オーストラリアの交通カードは都市ごとに違う

シドニーは Opal、メルボルンは Myki、ブリスベンは Go Card、パースは SmartRider と、都市によってICカードが異なります。引っ越すたびに新しいカードが必要です。「Where can I get a [card name]?」と聞きましょう。

タッチオフを忘れずに!

日本のSuicaと同じく、乗車時と降車時の両方でタッチが必要です。タッチオフを忘れると最大運賃が請求されます。「Did I tap off?」と自分に確認する習慣をつけましょう。バスの場合、降りるときは「Next stop, please」と言ってボタンを押します。

A (Koa):
Excuse me, does this bus go to Bondi Beach?
B:
Yeah, it does. The 333 goes straight there. Have you got an Opal card?
A (Koa):
Yes, I've just bought one. Do I tap on when I get on the bus?
B:
That's right. And don't forget to tap off when you get off, or you'll be charged the maximum fare.
A (Koa):
Thanks for the tip. How long does it take to get to Bondi from here?
B:
It usually takes about 20 minutes, but it can be longer during peak hours.
A (Koa):
I see. Is there a stop that is announced on the bus?
B:
Yes, the stops are announced and shown on a screen. You can also use the transport app which tracks the bus in real time.
A (Koa):
That's really helpful. I've already downloaded the app but haven't used it yet.
B:
It's really handy. Oh, here comes the bus now. After you!
