🌏 Day 1: Australia is a Big Country

オーストラリアの基本情報

An Extraordinary Land of Contrasts

Australia, officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is an extraordinary nation encompassing an entire continent. With a total area of approximately 7.7 million square kilometres, it ranks as the sixth largest country in the world, yet its population remains relatively modest at around 26 million inhabitants. Were it not for the fertile coastal regions, the country would be almost entirely uninhabitable, as the vast interior consists predominantly of arid desert known as the Outback. Not only is Australia surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, but it also possesses some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. The nation is divided into six states and two territories, each distinguished by its own unique geographical and cultural characteristics. Canberra, rather than Sydney or Melbourne, serves as the national capital — a fact that frequently surprises international visitors. Having been selected as a compromise between the two rival cities in 1908, Canberra was purposefully constructed as a planned capital city.

📍 Uluru (Ayers Rock)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Had I been asked to name the most awe-inspiring natural wonder I have ever witnessed, I would undoubtedly choose Uluru. Located in the heart of Australia's Red Centre, this monumental sandstone formation has stood for over 500 million years, serving as a sacred site for the Anangu people throughout countless generations. What struck me most profoundly was the way the rock's colour transforms throughout the day — from deep crimson at dawn to brilliant orange at sunset. Not only is the geological significance remarkable, but the spiritual importance to Indigenous Australians is equally compelling. Since October 2019, climbing Uluru has been permanently prohibited out of respect for Aboriginal cultural traditions. Visitors are instead encouraged to participate in guided walks led by knowledgeable local guides who share fascinating stories about the Dreamtime. Whoever visits this extraordinary landmark will leave with memories that last a lifetime. I would wholeheartedly recommend this destination to anyone planning a journey to Australia.

A (Koa):
G'day, Yuuki! Welcome to Australia. Had a good flight, did you?
B:
Thank you, Mark! The flight was quite long, but I managed to get some sleep. I've been looking forward to this trip for months.
A (Koa):
Glad to hear it! So, what do you reckon you know about our country so far?
B:
Well, I've read that Australia encompasses an entire continent, which I find absolutely fascinating.
A (Koa):
That's spot on! It's the sixth largest country in the world, yet the population is only around 26 million. Were it not for the coastal areas, hardly anyone would live here.
B:
That's considerably smaller than Japan's population! I suppose that means there's an abundance of open space.
A (Koa):
Too right! Most of the interior is what we call the Outback — predominantly desert. Not only is it sparsely populated, but it's also incredibly beautiful.
B:
I've also learned that Canberra is the capital, rather than Sydney. That surprised me at first.
A (Koa):
Yeah, heaps of people get that wrong. Canberra was specifically constructed as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, neither of which was willing to let the other become the capital.
B:
What a diplomatic solution! I'm eager to explore as many regions as possible during my working holiday.
A (Koa):
You'll have a ripper time! Just keep in mind that the distances between cities are enormous compared to what you're accustomed to in Japan.
B:
I'll definitely bear that in mind. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience Australian culture firsthand.
