🌞 Day 2: The Seasons are Opposite

When Winter Becomes Summer

Situated in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia experiences seasons that are the complete reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. When Japan is enduring the sweltering heat of August, Australians are wrapped up in winter clothing. Conversely, the Australian summer extends from December through February, meaning that Christmas is celebrated under brilliant sunshine rather than in snow. Had you grown up in Australia, you would have considered a beach barbecue on Christmas Day to be perfectly ordinary. The climate varies dramatically across the continent, depending predominantly on latitude and proximity to the coast. Northern regions, which lie closer to the equator, maintain a tropical climate characterised by distinct wet and dry seasons. Meanwhile, southern cities such as Melbourne and Hobart experience a more temperate climate with clearly defined four seasons. What many travellers fail to anticipate is the extreme temperature variation within a single day — particularly in desert regions, where scorching daytime heat gives way to surprisingly frigid nights.

📍 Bondi Beach, Sydney
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Having visited Bondi Beach on Christmas Day, I can confidently say it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Never had I imagined that I would be swimming in the ocean on the 25th of December, yet there I was, surrounded by thousands of festive beachgoers. Located merely seven kilometres from Sydney's central business district, Bondi Beach is arguably the most renowned beach in all of Australia. The golden sand stretches for approximately one kilometre, and the turquoise waters are consistently patrolled by the famous Bondi lifeguards. What I found particularly remarkable was the vibrant atmosphere — wherever you looked, people were surfing, playing volleyball, or simply basking in the sunshine. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is equally spectacular, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Were I to visit Sydney again, Bondi Beach would undeniably be my first destination. It perfectly encapsulates the quintessentially Australian outdoor lifestyle.

オゾン層が薄い南半球に位置するため、特に夏場は「Slip(長袖を着る)、Slop(日焼け止めを塗る)、Slap(帽子をかぶる)、Seek(日陰を探す)、Slide(サングラスをかける)」の5Sが推奨されています。皮膚がんの発生率が世界最高レベルの国なので、日焼け対策は真剣に行いましょう。

🎭 ユウキが、オーストラリア人のホストマザー、リサとオーストラリアの季節と天気について話しています。
A (Koa):
Yuuki, have you noticed how warm it is today? It's the middle of December, after all!
B:
Yes, it feels so strange! Had someone told me a year ago that I'd be sweating in December, I wouldn't have believed them.
A (Koa):
I can imagine! The seasons here are the complete opposite of what you're accustomed to in Japan, aren't they?
B:
Absolutely. In Japan, December is typically freezing cold. How do you celebrate Christmas in such warm weather?
A (Koa):
We usually have a barbecue outdoors! Not only do we grill seafood and steaks, but we also set up a table right in the backyard. It's a tradition most Australian families cherish.
B:
That sounds wonderful! I've read that the climate varies considerably depending on which part of Australia you're in.
A (Koa):
That's correct. Northern Queensland has a tropical climate with wet and dry seasons, whereas down here in Melbourne, we experience all four seasons — sometimes in one day!
B:
What do you mean by four seasons in one day? That sounds rather unpredictable.
A (Koa):
Melbourne is notorious for its changeable weather. You might start the morning with sunshine, encounter rain by midday, and then have it clear up by evening. That's why we always say, 'If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes!'
B:
I'll make sure to carry an umbrella at all times, then. By the way, I've heard that sunburn is a serious concern here.
A (Koa):
Absolutely! The UV levels here are far more intense than what you'd experience in Japan. You should always apply sunscreen, even on overcast days. Slip, Slop, Slap — that's what we teach our kids.
B:
I appreciate the advice. I certainly wouldn't want to underestimate the Australian sun!
