Australia is a country that has three main time zones. The eastern states, which include New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, use Australian Eastern Standard Time. This zone is one hour ahead of Japan during winter. Central Australia, which covers South Australia and the Northern Territory, is 30 minutes behind the east. Western Australia uses a time zone that is one hour behind Japan. To make things more complicated, daylight saving time has been adopted by some states but not others. Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory have chosen not to use it. This means that during summer, the time difference between Sydney and Tokyo changes from one hour to two hours. Many working holiday makers who have moved to Australia find it confusing at first when scheduling video calls with their family back in Japan.
